Victorian Pride Centre

Projects

The Victorian Pride Centre is home to multiple organisations for the LGBTIQ+ communities.

The Centre held a 2018 design competition for a new building in the eclectic Melbourne suburb of St Kilda.

This is BKK’s competition scheme, which we designed in collaboration with Sibling Architecture. We conceived it as a landmark to diversity and inclusion.

The building’s shape presents as a solid exterior but, on closer inspection, comprises various materials and opacities including concrete, perforated mesh, transparencies, mirrors and dichroic sheens.

Through this gradation of architectural tectonics, light filters throughout to create a spectrum of momentary colours, recalling the symbolic rainbow of the Pride community.

Most importantly, the LGBTIQ+ community is the primary focus of the scheme and its presence on the street.
