Wellspring: a public art scheme
This public-art proposal was a collaboration with Australian artist
Louise Paramor.
It was part of the City of Melbourne’s Transforming Southbank Boulevard and Dodds Street project. Wellspring was to be distinctly civic: more than a work to look at, it would be a place for people to gather. It has programmable sound works, light and mist.
Artistically, the work references Southbank’s Indigenous history as a gathering place focused on water.
It also recalls other local public sculptures: Robin Boyd’s now-demolished Southgate Fountain and Ron Robertson-Swann’s controversial Vault.
Other contributors included Shapeshift, Relume Consulting and Sonic State Design.
BKK worked closely with Louise Paramor to develop costing options and detailing for constructability and procurements. We also worked through an extensive consultation process with the City of Melbourne.
