Doug Ellis Swimming Pool Refurbishment
The Doug Ellis is an indoor aquatic centre on Monash’s University’s Clayton campus. It has two six-lane 25m pools plus a leisure pool, spa, sauna etc.
It’s open to the public and is set up for lessons, lap swimming, and sports including water polo and scuba diving.
Our refurbishment project came about because the original 1982 structure was ageing, but Monash soon realised that the project should be much more than remedial works.
Our collaborative design process with the services engineers ensured services were integral to the architecture and, in fact, formed part of its expression.
The project included:
- replacing the roof to address corrosion, leaking, thermal performance and aesthetics
- installing a new HVAC system
- replacing the thermal heating system for the pools
- minor internal upgrades, including fire services
- increasing natural light and installing more efficient artificial light.
Beyond this, the new roof brought urban design improvements within Monash’s masterplan for its sports precinct.
Because it is seen and used by the public, the Doug Ellis plays an important role in Monash’s relationship with the community.
Our new signage beacon and the north-facing skylight hoods (which define the roof’s character) look engaging from the road and footpath.
The building is well lit at night, which contributes to campus security.
