This sinuous band is our retaining wall on Fitzsimons Lane in the Melbourne bushland suburb of Eltham.
It leans and curves to hug the landform’s natural contours.
The textured pattern is an interpretation of the shale that’s common in the local geology, and the diamond shapes reference nearby Diamond Creek. The sculpted wall shrinks and grows with the embankment’s height, lying as low as possible to reveal bushland views.
The wall is part of Major Road Projects Victoria’s Fitzsimons Lane Upgrade project.
BKK partnered with Arcadis, ASPECT Studios and BMD to design and deliver it.
